Under The Hood
Audi/VW EA888.3 Cam solenoids

When working with Audi, Seat, Skoda, and Volkswagen vehicles, especially those equipped with the EA888 Gen3 2.0 TFSI engine from 2013-2020, it's not uncommon to encounter engines where the camshaft position fluctuates with the precision of a lottery machine, even at relatively low mileage.

Symptoms include:

  • Slight roughness at idle

  • Wavering power delivery under load

  • Overall lackluster performance

  •

In many cases, there may not yet be any fault codes present, leading repair shops to conclude that the car is "in good condition."

The attached image quickly illustrates that "in good condition" is a relative concept.

In the image, you can see intake and exhaust camshaft positions, shown as the values requested by the engine control unit versus the actual achieved values (e.g., the orange/blue pair). Ideally, these should closely follow each other.

  1. In the top image, you can see that while the attempt is there, it doesn’t hit the mark – the actual camshaft position swings erratically from one extreme to the other.

  2. In the bottom image, with a fresh solenoid installed, the data looks much more stable – as does the engine’s performance.

What causes this camshaft issue in EA888.3 engines?

In most cases, the culprit is a worn-out magnetic solenoid, which can be found conveniently on the accessory side of the engine.

Occasionally, the issue lies deeper: the metal adjustment valve inside the camshaft gear may have become dirty or broken, causing it to "leak" internally.

Rarely, and typically at higher mileage, the problem could stem from actual wear in the camshaft gear mechanism, leading to a more significant repair.

The solution?
