DSG Oil Change

Alrighty then, fresh soup to them gears. How?

This page provides some information specifically about DSG oil changes.

As with all of our services, our strong connection to specialty cars and motorsport brings not only a perfectionist's attitude to the table but also the use of the highest-quality tools, premium materials, and lubricants, while taking care of the customer’s car with pride.

Don’t know when your transmission was last serviced, or has it been a long time since the last maintenance?
Does the transmission feel strange, struggle in high gears, or over-rev in low ones?
Do the gears no longer seem to engage as they used to, and the operation feels sluggish?
Does the clutch seem to slip under heavy load or when towing a trailer?
Is your car showing a fault code related to the transmission?

We’ll take care of proper maintenance and possible upgrades as desired.

At the same time, we can also handle other repairs or scheduled services for your car.

Why is DSG maintenance important, and how does it work?

An oil change for a DSG transmission is a critical part of its upkeep. Especially in models where the clutch packs operate "wet" in oil, impurities gradually accumulate in the oil, and its composition degrades and burns with use.

  • The clutch begins to stick and slip under load.

  • The clutch and other components wear prematurely.

  • Shifts are no longer smooth or fast.

  • The transmission becomes "sluggish" and hesitant, especially during cold starts.

How often should DSG oil be changed?

For models equipped with so-called wet clutches, an oil change must be performed at least every 60,000 km. In more demanding use, such as track driving or towing a trailer, halving this interval is also a good idea.

For models with a dry clutch that is separated from the main gearbox and mechatronics oil, the interval is slightly more forgiving because clutch slippage does not contaminate the oil in the same way. However, even in these models, it’s a good idea to perform proper maintenance at least every 100,000 km.

Remember: Maintenance is always cheaper than repairs.

Oil changes must be done CORRECTLY.

- "Alright, so maintenance is important. Let's get on it, my buddy George supposedly has some oil in the garage and an old wrench somewhere."

Before doing anything we might regret, let's consider a few important points:

  • The correct type and quality of oil are essential.
Transmission oils are changed less frequently than engine oils and face various stresses in the drivetrain.

  • Oil ensures the proper functioning of control valves and mechanisms (mechatronics).

  • Oil lubricates gears and components, preventing metal-to-metal contact.

  • Oil minimizes friction for smooth and fuel-efficient operation.

  • Oil keeps the clutch cool, allows it to slip when appropriate, and ensures it doesn’t slip under load.

The specific oil type varies by model, but we typically use:

a) Genuine VAG Gearbox oil

b) High-quality and uncompromising Amsoil DCT oil, suitable even for demanding use, while maintaining its properties over time. Keeps the mechatronics smooth and functional. (Order online: AMSOIL DCT DSG Oil)

The correct oil quantity is critically important.

The operation of the transmission heavily depends on having precisely the right amount of oil in the system. A common mistake in DSG maintenance is underfilling, which can easily happen if the correct process and manufacturer guidelines are not strictly followed.

This quickly leads to operational issues and, unfortunately, often results in damage to the transmission or clutch.

During the oil change, the correct temperature is maintained at each stage of the process. Additionally, the mechatronics control mechanism and pump are properly filled and bled using diagnostic VAG tools. Finally, the transmission and DSG mechatronics are adapted to the completed maintenance.

Maintenance is essential – but there’s much more you can do.

While proper maintenance is the foundation of a well-functioning transmission, it alone won’t take you to the moon.

A real, noticeable transformation comes from completely updating the transmission’s control software. This eliminates the drivability issues caused by factory defaults and improves durability by preventing situations like overheating and slippage that stock programming unnecessarily allows.
